BlakDance Residency Program

Tyrel, Josh, Zayah

In November 2021, BlakDance brought together three First Nations dance artists from diverse artistic backgrounds to spend time together in a studio to explore creative possibilities.

During the week-long residency at the Brisbane Powerhouse, Tyrel Dulvarie Yirrganydji, Djirrabul, Kalkadoon and Umpila peoples, Joshua Taliani Bidjara and Kullali peoples and Zayah Bond Teppathiggi, Kala Lagaw Ya (Badu Island) shared practice and process from their individual backgrounds in dance and theatre, bringing together contemporary dance, Vogue and Hip Hop. They also discussed their experiences in the LGBTIQ & Ballroom communities and developed mutual research interests.

This residency seeded ideas for future developments and instigated an exciting new collaboration between this trio of artists.
