BlakDance Residency Program

OLIVIA ADAMS

In this residency Wulli Wulli woman Olivia Adams began exploring a new work, Matriarchs (working title).

This project is an exploration of identity through the stories of the women who have come before; Mothers, Grandmothers, Great Grandmothers. It reveals how their experiences as Indigenous women shaped them and therefore us. Exploring identity, trauma and shame, Matriarchs (working title) uses contemporary dance alongside visual art to express the complexity of being an Indigenous woman.

Olivia collaborated with her sister and visual artist Arabella Walker and other family members on Country and in the studio with support from mentors and Bidjara woman Yolande Brown, and Kabi Kabi/Gubbi Gubbi, Wiradjuri storyteller Alethea Beetson.
