Cicatrix 1 (that which is taken/that which remains), specially made for KIN, is a chain of actions, woven from the syncretic tissues of buried rites for mourning and remembrance. In particular, Cicatrix 1 considers the collision of Indigenous, queer, and trans bodies with state power, specifically the abuse and obliteration of those bodies by the carceral state. A long- durational ritual unfolding over approximately 4 hours, Cicatrix 1 begins with the lighting of a medicinal fire and concludes with an outdoor, midnight procession. Daina Ashbee Canadian choreographer Daina Ashbee is known for her radical works at the edge of dance and performance. At the age of 26, she had already won two awards for her choreographies: a double prizewinner at the Prix de la danse de Montréal, winning both the Prix du CALQ for Best Choreography of 2015-2016 for her choreographic installation When the Ice Melts, Will We Drink the Water?, and the Prix Découverte de la danse, for Unrelated (her first choreography). In 2017, Daina was named by the German TANZ magazine as one of 30 promising artists and by the American DANCE in 2018 as one of 25 to watch. In 2019, Daina won the New York Dance and Performance Award, Bessie, for Outstanding Choreographer. Two separate Retrospectives of her performance artworks were organized (Montpellier, France, and Montreal, Canada). She is the recipient of 2022 Clifford E. Lee Choreographer Award from The Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity. One of the most prolific choreographers of her generation, her work has since 2015 been presented over one-hundred times in 19 countries and over 40 different cities at some of the most prestigious festivals (Venice Biennale, Oktoberdans, Munich Dance Biennale, Montpellier Danse) and throughout the world. She resides on Gabriola Island, British Columbia (unceded territory of Snuneymuxw Nation) where she re-sources her creative and energetic practices close to the rain forest on the west coast of Canada while she is not touring or creating abroad. Her work, firmly established in somatic and energetic practices, reinvestigates and transforms trauma and violence. Her repertoire has been recognized for being unafraid, bold and brutally honest. She has created a unique artistic signature that seizes a purpose far beyond dance and performance aesthetics. Fangas is an artist, director, choreographer, and performer. His versatile practices probe into the dynamics of audience participation and the possibilities of new technology in the performing arts, while constantly reflecting on his indigenous identity and cultural tradition as Amis. These are seen in Don’t worry, be happy (2009), Farewell, Lin-Ban (2013), Tsou (“Name of Tribe'', 2015), Maataw (“Floating Island”, 2016), si, kaen (“Eating”, 2017), XXIX Summer Universiade Opening Program I (2017) and Alikakay (“The Giant”, 2019). His VR film work, A Song within Us, was selected in the SXSW VR competition 2020; the performance work, masingkiay: Co-creating a Collective, was invited to Cosmopolis #2 in Pompidou Centre, Paris in 2019. His directorial and choreographic work, Mailulay, won the 14th Taishin Arts Award in 2016 (as one of the five annual prize winners). His works are intimate encounters in unorthodox spaces, in which audience-members are invited in as co-storytellers to explore the experiences of fair-skinned Aboriginal people, and the experiences of contemporary gay men in an increasingly digital and isolated world. His body becomes the intersection site of those songlines- Indigenous heritage, skin-colour and queer sexuality. Joel trained at NAISDA and WAAPA before pursuing a career in Europe and Israel with Jean-Claude Gallotta, Company CeDeCe , Kolben Dance, Machol Shalem Dance House, Yoram Karmi’s FRESCO Dance Company, Niv Sheinfeld & Oren Laor and Roy Assaf. He returned to Australia in 2015 to work with CHUNKY MOVE. Joel’s first work as a choreographer Biladurang won three Melbourne Fringe Awards in 2016. Since then Joel has created solo and ensemble dance works including Dharawungara, Daddy, Considerable Sexual License and I Liked it BUT… Joel is currently developing a new large scale work Garabari, which premieres in Melbourne in December 2022. During the pandemic Joel created a multichannel video installation Giraru Galing Ganhagirri. She is the founder and artistic director of Invisible People Contemporary Dance Company where she is currently touring with Ájttega and Akti Lij. She is the creator of Låvda - Sápmi screendance festival and the indigenous cultural festival Skájdde in Storforsen nature reserve. She is currently in the start up of the world's first sami dance center in the north of Sweden outside Jokkmokk. She has a BA in dance and MA in choreography from Institute of the arts Barcelona. Her artistic journey started off with realizing there was no dance jobs where you could express your sami indigenous background combined with contemporary dance. During her MA in dance she did create an unique dance style called yoik meets dance. This was the beginning of creating the production “Ájttega”-the ancestors. She explored what happens when the traditional singing yoik meets dance and imbodied the sound and feeling the yoik expressed. Soon in her practice she realized there are many similarities in the dance and the technique of yoik itself. Notes were taken on common patterns in her research and a style of dancing was defined. Ájttega is the first production created with this style of dancing and has been shared in both Sweden and Canada. Since joining Resident Island Dance Theatre in 2016 as a producer, Sasa has been committed to developing and connecting international and Taiwanese networks, integrating resources, and accumulating energy and experience. Leveraging artistic expertise, Sasa has forged strong relationships with communities, with a particular focus on minority groups such as Indigenous peoples, persons with disabilities, and female artists. Sasa has been instrumental in helping communities develop cultural activities, actively fostering communication and exchange between different ethnic groups, and advocating for equality through the arts, using culture as a form of diplomacy. Sasa has producted several piece with RIDT and participated in the ISPA Pitch New Work and has been invited to several prestigious international arts festivals, including the Taiwan Dance Platform, Gather Together Festival (Glasgow, Scotland), Dance Base (premiered in 2022 at the Edinburgh Fringe), American Dance Festival, Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival, Korean International Accessible Dance Festival, and was also part of the Taiwanese delegation for the sixth edition of Center Stage, sponsored by the U.S. Department of State. One of her proudest achievements is the development of the "Inclusive Workshop" community program. This initiative aims to enhance the right to participate in the arts, providing marginalized groups the opportunity to connect and understand one another through dance, ultimately building trust and creating together. Through public performances in a sharing environment, the program challenges societal stereotypes while also supporting persons with disabilities in becoming professional dancers and engaging in professional performing arts productions. Since 2020, she has organized the "Culture Strolling & Observing" project, inviting guests to stay for three days in Wanjin Village, a Makatao community. The project includes dialogues with elders, experiencing their daily life, tasting local food, experiencing an annual catholic ceremony, and a review of old photographs to explore the evolution of the Makatao people under colonial and religious influence in modern times. Lang trained at the National Aboriginal and Islander Dance School and has toured nationally and internationally with some of Australia's premier dance companies including Bangarra and Dancenorth. His new work The Other Side Of Me recently premiered in Darwin Festival 2023 and completed a regional Western and Central Australia tour in 2024. Lang founded NT Dance Company and has been choreographing full-length works since 2008.
